Dear Parent/Carer,
The weeks are flying by in what has already been an extremely busy term. We hope you find the information in this newsletter useful; we welcome any feedback. We would like to thank you for your continued support and as always if you have any queries, please contact the school office and we will be happy to assist you.
Many thanks,
Alan Markey
Head Teacher
Staffing Update
We would like to welcome Miss Amy Milne who started her modern apprenticeship in our nursery in January. We also welcome Miss Juliet Bentley who is a trainee Early Years Practitioner. They are both settling into life at Hanover Street very well.
Parent Council/PTA
A huge thanks for the kind donations of the Parent Council who supported all our Christmas activities. They are also kindly donating money for new playground equipment.
On behalf of the school and Parent Council, we thank you for your support at school fundraising events. It goes a long way in supporting children’s learning experiences at school.
Ceilidh
This year’s Ceilidh was another hugely successful event with a fantastic turnout from families. The pupils performed brilliantly and with confidence and we are very proud of their achievements. Again, thank you for your attendance and support.
Chess Club
We welcome any volunteers who could assist in the running of our Chess Club. If you would like to help, please contact Miss Forbes.
Eco Cooking Club
Mrs Elrick has kindly given up her time to run the Eco cooking club. This club is part of the overall project named ‘Project Love Yourself, Love Your World! Choose Healthy, Nutritious, Sustainable Food’ which aims to teach our pupils about food sustainability. We want them to understand the wider environmental implications of our food choices. We also aim to reduce carbon emissions associated with food by encouraging the growing and consumption of our own food and understand the range of food choices available to us.
We will post our recipes and video demonstrations on our YouTube channel and one is available here https://youtu.be/Q5aRw4oHYcA.
Read for Good
Throughout the month of March, we will be taking part in ‘Read for Good’. For this we will be having a Readathon throughout the month and if we reach our target amount of minutes, we will receive free books for our Library and also earn books for Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital. We thank you in advance for your support of this initiative. More info to follow separately.
Early Years Expansion – Parent Info Session
There will be an Early Years Expansion information session on Tuesday 4th February @ Kaimhill Primary School, Pitmedden Terrace, Aberdeen AB10 7HR. The session takes place between 6.30 and 8.00pm.
Absence Notification
Please notify the school if your child is to be absent for any reason. It is also important that you complete the general permission and medical information sheet to allow us to contact you in an emergency.
General reminders
Road Safety- Please be careful and act responsibly crossing the roads. We do not have lollipop people at the moment and it is important that we are demonstrating road safety to all the children. Please see www.roadsafety.scot/learning to support this.
Lateness – Please ensure that your child arrives at school on time for a 9.00am start, being late on several occasions can seriously disrupt your child’s education. We thank for you co-operation in this matter.
Uniform- We have seen an improvement in the number of pupils wearing school uniform. We would like to see a continued improvement in this. The uniform bank is available in school so please contact the school if you would like to access this. Thank you to all of those who have helped shape our uniform bank.
Clothing/Personal belongings – Please label all children’s clothing and belongings. We still have a large amount of unclaimed property.
Car Parking – Car parks are for staff only. Some families with a disability parking badge are permitted to use them. Please remember that children and adults should not walk through the car park – they should enter the school via the main gate (see below).
Entering/Leaving the school– When you enter/leave the school, please make sure you close the gate. It is a heavy gate, but you are able to close it. It’s deliberately heavy so that it can stay shut and keep children safe in the playground. See also: https://hanover.aberdeen.sch.uk/2019/05/23/school-security-and-access-for-parents/
Lining Up– Please stand well back once the children are lined up. There is a white boundary line in the infant playground. It is important that the teachers have a clear view of their classes. Thank you.
Termly Head Lice Reminder– Please continue to check heads regularly. Guidance can be viewed by clicking on the links here: https://hanover.aberdeen.sch.uk/2019/05/06/termly-reminder-head-lice-detection-and-treatment-2/
Jewellery – No jewellery of any sort can be worn during a PE activity. All jewellery, including earrings, must be removed. Stud earrings may be covered with tape, which you must provide. P1 and P2 children will be helped to remove jewellery. If jewellery cannot be removed or covered, then your child will not be allowed to take part in the PE lesson.
